African Inspired Art

Grade 4 African patterns and clothing

As I planned the school’s Art show, Art Around the World, I decided to put together a mixed media project by creating papier mache figures onto painted fabric.

To begin students ruled borders onto calico, painted them black and then filled the background with simple items that could be seen in an African desert.

Next they bent florist wire into figures and used papier mache to cover the wire with 2 newspaper layers and one white paper layer.

Once the glue was dry they looked at clothing on the internet that showed African patterns, clothing style and colour to paint their papier mache figures.

Lastly, students sewed the figures in the desired location onto the calico.
